Bismarck, Half Moon Lake, active 1938 Beverly Miner writes ... Camp Fannie
Bailey Olcott. It was located on Half Moon Lake,
South of Eveleth Minnesota
... It was in the Duluth GS Council, later called Northern Pines GS Council.
The office was located in Duluth. The photo of the entrance was taken in
1956 and the names of the girls pictured are: Marilyn Condon, Betsy Haley,
Helen Dwan, Susan Monaghan. Judging from the last names, I think all were
from Duluth.
Camp Olcott was donated in 1929 by William J. Olcott,
President of Oliver Iron Mining Company. He had originally established it in
his wife's name in 1927, as a respite for the wives of the workers in his
company. It gave them a place to relax out of the city. He figured that if
the wives were happy, the husband would be happy - "happy people do good
work!" It closed after two or three summers because of the constant
bickering and quarreling, which occurred between the employees' wives who
were at the lodge.
Fannie Bailey Olcott Girl Scout Camp, opened June 17 1931
and was dedicated to the Duluth Girl Scout Council July 22, 1931. It closed
in the 1970s. It now belongs to Camp Warren Y.M.C.A., which is located
across the lake. The buildings were torn down or moved to Camp Warren.
I have great memories of the camp and had permission to roam
around the grounds in 2006. The only thing remaining was the tennis courts,
which helped give me a point of reference. The camp was very overgrown with
trees. |
