Girl Scout Purses have helped to encourage the "thrifty" spirit of Girl Scouting.
Designs and styles changed regularly to keep up with fashion trends. Originally purses were meant for women, later designs were smaller for Girl Scouts. 1969 was the last year for adult purses. Trends were changing to canvas totes, folios and backpacks.

Prior to World War 2, there were not many purses or wallets offered. Some small coin purses were offered during the war era, but large purses were not. Instead "Service Bags" were offered - unmarked large cloth bags.
