Introduced in 1955, Interest Patches continued until 1979 and covered a wide
range of programs for the older girl.
The first five were Trail Blazer, Mountaineer, Mounted, Wing and Explorer. Each
was 3" in diameter, had dark green borders and had the yellow sunburst behind
the design. Senior troops that did not have an specific interest wore the Multi-interset
patch - the traditional logo on the patch, introduced in 1958.
1960 brought changes; patches were now 2 1/4" and had colorful borders, some
designs were dropped and new ones added for a total of seven patches; Mounted
(light green), Mariner (gold), Wings (orange), International Friendship (green),
General Interest (green), Explorer (green), Trail Blazer/Mountaineer (red).
The sweeping changes in the Girl Scouting program of 1963 also effected the
Interest patches; the border colors changed as patch designs were dropped and
new ones added. The total now reached 9; International Friendship (gold),
Community Action (green), Homemaker (turquoise), Mariner (white), Wing (orange),
Arts (lavender), Trail Blazer (red), Mounted (red) and Panorama (yellow).
Brand new designs were offered in 1974 on solid embroidered 2 3/4" patches;
Multicultural World, Natural World and the World of the Arts. A Create Your Own
Patch was introduced in 1977. These patches were also encouraged for unofficial
wear. All patches were discontinued by 1979.
